Coughing is a way our body gets rid of irritants.
When something irritates our throat or airway, our nervous system immediately sends an alarm to our brain. Our brain responds by telling the muscles in Our chest and abdomen to contract and expel a burst of air.
A cough is a necessary defensive reflex that helps protect our body from irritants like mucus, smoke, and allergens such as dust and pollen.
Coughing is a symptom of many illnesses and conditions. Many times the characteristics of Our cough can give us a clue to its cause.
There are majorly 4 types of cough

- Wet Cough
- Paroxysmal cough
- Croup cough
Dry coughs occur when there’s any kind of irritation or inflammation in our respiratory tract but no mucus build up.
Almost 60% of the positive cases of COVID-19 reported dry cough as a prominent symptom.
A dry cough does not have any mucus.A dry cough feels scratchy and characterized by zero phlegm production, unlike in wet cough
Dry coughs are often caused by upper respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu.

Croup is a viral infection that typically affects children of ages 5 and below. The cough causes the upper airway to become irritated and swollen,Since young children have narrower airways swelling further narrows the airway causing difficulties in breathing.
Croup causes a characteristic “barking” cough that sounds like a seal. Swelling in and around the larynx (The Voice box) also causes a raspy voice and squeaky breathing noises.
There are many different types of coughs. COVID-19 is mostly characterised by dry cough while common cold is characterised by wet cough. One must immediately report dry cough symptoms to their nearest medical establishment .
