A cough is a necessary defensive reflex that helps protect our body from irritants like mucus, smoke, and allergens such as dust and pollen.

Dry cough

Dry coughs occur when there’s any kind of  irritation or inflammation in our respiratory tract but no mucus build up.

A dry cough does not have any mucus.A dry cough feels scratchy and characterized by zero phlegm production, unlike in wet cough

Dry coughs are often caused by upper respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu.

  • sinusitis
  • asthma
  • allergies
  • gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • medications, especially ACE inhibitors

Wet cough

A wet cough, also known as productive cough, is characterised by the production of mucus during the action. They can come on slowly or quickly and may be accompanied by some other symptoms, such as runny nose post nasal drip and fatigue

In a wet cough, one may feel like there’s something stuck at the back of their throat.  The duration of a cough may be a big clue as to its cause.

Conditions that can cause a wet cough include:

  • cold or flu
  • pneumonia
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including emphysema and chronic bronchitis
  • acute bronchitis
  • asthma

Coughs in babies, toddlers, and children that last less than three weeks are almost always caused by a cold or flu.

Paroxysmal cough

A paroxysmal cough is characterised  with irregular attacks of violent, uncontrollable coughing.

A paroxysmal cough is very exhausting and painful. People may even struggle to get a breath and may vomit.

Babies are more prone to whooping cough and face more severe complications from it.

Croup cough

Croup is a viral infection that typically affects children of ages 5 and below. The cough causes the upper airway to become irritated and swollen,Since young children have narrower airways swelling further narrows the airway causing difficulties in breathing.

Croup causes a characteristic “barking” cough that sounds like a seal. Swelling in and around the larynx (The Voice box) also causes a raspy voice and squeaky breathing noises.
